Plagiarism Prevention at King College

For a faculty member, responding to an incidence of academic dishonesty can be frustrating, stressful, and disappointing. The Office of the Dean of Students is available to work with you through the process to help guide you in implementation of college policies and to help ensure institutional consistency in dealing with academic dishonesty violations of the Honor Code. Contact Matt Peltier for help.

When you encounter what you feel to be an instance of Academic Dishonesty, your first step should be to contact the Dean of Students.

During this initial conversation, we will discuss the incident, check to see if the student has had previous academic dishonesty violations of the Honor Code, and review the options that are available to you.

Library Quality Enhancement Project (QEP)

Currently, the library is conducting a plagiarism prevention focused project exclusively for Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) students to support King College's QEP: "The Effective Use of Oral and Written Communication".

The E.W. King Library’s QEP Plagiarism Project will provide quality insight and information regarding how our GPS students process, synthesize, and communicate information in their assignments. The purpose of this project is to teach students to avoid plagiarism by training both GPS faculty and students to avoid and detect plagiarism. Students will be required to complete an online tutorial in Blackboard about plagiarism, intellectual property, and ethics focusing on the King College Honor Code. GPS faculty will be required to use Safe Assign, Blackboard’s plagiarism detection tool.

The program will address two QEP outcomes:

  • demonstrates sufficient skills in research to prepare presentations or reports which require summarizing, paraphrasing, direct quotations, citations of sources and bibliographic entries
  • cites sources to give credit to the author of ideas or information, whether quoted exactly or paraphrased.

By measuring student plagiarism awareness, understanding student needs, and modifying our student assignment assessment process; our King College faculty members can provide informed opportunities for the intellectual and ethical growth of our students.
